Open Mind – film for listening to

This is a photograph of a black burnt cube of oak, but I changed the shutter speed to allow more light in.

Unlike the human brain/mind, the camera can have an open mind for long periods of perception.

film haiku no. 2 – raindrops

Diane from folkestone fringe asked me a while ago, much to my delight, to make a piece in response to a sound work by the Argentinian artist, Juan José Calarco.

I spent most of August dreaming up water sculptures that moved to the sound, then underwater photography ideas of waves crashing against the rocks, then ink drawings inspired by Zen painting; a visualisation of the sound heard, like sheet music, but abstracted.

I finally resolved the idea with a simple disk shape mobile, made from wood, absorbent black paint and gold leaf.

The disk turned with the movement of wind or people blowing on it.

The sounds of the Argentinian light house were metallic and dark and industrial. Juan’s sound piece conjured up a darkness in my imagination and he explained in an email that he was mainly recording at dusk in the twilight.

The disk turned slowly and it did work with the metallic rotating sensation found in the sound piece.

Art in The Romney Marsh

Open: for four weekends;

17/18, 24/25 September and 1/2, 8/9 October 2011

1-5pm

I will be exhibiting an installation of three films made for Lydd Church.

It is a very exciting opportunity to work in a church as I am fascinated by religion and spirituality and the spaces are so loaded with history, faith and love.

My installation is focused on cycles; of life and death, seasons and physically from north, round through east and south to the west.

camera obscura…refined

August 8, 2011

Young family watching the clouds move inside the darkened room.

It was a perfect day for my second camera obscura exhibition: really sunny and bright with fast-moving fluffy clouds.

The up-side-down silhouette town scape stayed still whilst the air and water, sun and universe moved around us.

Thank you to all visitors for climbing the 78 wooden stairs to see my artwork.
